RECALL: Siemens Industry SolarReady meter combos due to fire hazard

August 27, 2024 | By Anthony Capkun

August 27, 2024 – Siemens is recalling SolarReady meter combos, catalogue numbers MC2442S1200SC and MC2442S1200FC, due to a possible poor electrical connection that could result in overheating, and present the risk of fire.

Specifically, a wire with an incorrect stripping length may have been applied in the internal assembly, which allows for a lug set screw to compress the wire insulation instead of the conductor alone.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explains this product serves as the connection point between the utility power supply, a rooftop solar system, and the main electrical panel serving a home. Depending on the installation, the panel within this product could contain the branch breaker circuits for the entire home, or part of the home.

This panel also contains the main breaker service disconnect for the whole home’s power.

The recall involves roughly 3900 units manufactured in Mexico from August 2021 through August 2022, and sold at electrical distributors across the United States from August 2021 through April 2024 for between about $640 and $990 (depending on the model).

It is not known how many, if any, units made their way into Canada.

Siemens has received eight reports of overheating, including one report of a localized fire. No injuries have been reported.
