Michael Law is leaving AESO; Aaron Engen taking over as president & CEO

July 5, 2024 – Michael Law, president & CEO of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), is leaving the organization effective August 1, 2024.

Following Law’s departure, Aaron Engen will assume the role of president & CEO. Engen has served on AESO’s board since 2020 and currently serves chair of the Power System Committee.

He possesses over two decades of investment banking experience, most recently as vice-chair, Investment & Corporate Banking, at BMO Capital Markets. His work focused on energy infrastructure, including power and utilities. He also co-headed the bank’s Power & Energy Infrastructure group.

More recently, Engen co-headed BMO’s Energy Transition group, which focused on sectors such as hydrogen, carbon capture and sequestration, renewable natural gas, renewable power generation, energy storage, and small modular reactors.
